Latest research in combining sports technology and coaching

Ph.D. Vesa Linnamo will be our speaker in the next Happy Textiles meetup regarding smart textiles in competitive sports.

Vesa Linnamo is a professor in sports technology in the Facualty of Sport and Health Sciences at University of Jyväskylä. He has received his Ph.D. in Biomechanics from the University of Jyväskylä 2002. His research interest area involves motor control and neuromuscular adaptation along with sports biomechanics, especially in Nordic winter sports. In 2015, Vesa Linnamo received the Elias Lönnrot award from The Finnish Cultural Foundation for innovative research of sports and wellbeing.

Vesa Linnamo has long-term international experience and several publications:

Sport Technology Unit Vuokatti, has been a research center of sports technology for over 15 years. The center is one of the top sport technology centers in the world, and they are doing international collaboration with other research centers worldwide.

Next doctoral theses to be published are related to biomechanics in cross-country skiing and sit-skiing.

In the meetup professor Linnamo will be presenting us a sport testing method in which the athlete and the coach can receive feedback of the performance in real-time. The results of the feedback can be utilized in e.g. improving the cross-country skiing technique. Textiles can be integrated to the system and the information can be combined to other measured parts.

“In combining coaching and technology the most important thing is that the information is in an understandable form for the athlete and the coach. Basically everything can be measured, but the point is to know what and why in order to extract the correct facts from the data” explains Vesa Linnamo.

Being a true sportsman, sport is filling Vesa Linnamo’s days at work and in his spare time. His workplace Vuokatti located next to Vuokatti Sport is offering excellent facilities for both indoors and outdoors sport. Linnamo can be seen playing badminton, working out, jogging or doing cross-country skiing in the winter time. Closest to his heart is still basketball that has been his favorite sport from the early years. He has played basketball in the top league and coached adults and juniors in different series.

What kind of smart textile and wearable solutions do coaches and athletes need the most? What kind of needs do companies in this field have? Come and join our next meetup to learn, discuss and network.

See you at We+ co-working place in Helsinki on Thursday 25th April at 14:00.
